Discovering Capps Corner

Where is Capps Corner?

Capps Corner is located in the northeastern part of Montague County, Texas. You can find it where two roads meet: Farm to Market Road 1956 (also called "Hoosier Highway") and Farm to Market Road 677. It's about 13 miles east of Nocona, eight miles north of Saint Jo, and six miles south of Illinois Bend.

A Glimpse into Capps Corner's Past

This small community started around 1925. It was named after a person called E. G. (Cap) Adams. Capps Corner was still recognized as a community in 1990.

What Made Capps Corner Special?

For many years, the main spot in Capps Corner was a gas station right at the corner of the two farm roads. It even had "Capps Corner" written above its old-fashioned gas pumps! This store stayed open until the 1980s. Even though it's closed now, you can still see the building there today.

Capps Corner also used to have its own small school. However, in 1961, this school joined with the Saint Jo Independent School District. You can still see the old school building about one city block west of the former gas station.

Capps Corner Today

Today, Capps Corner remains a very small place. The population is less than 100 people. It's a quiet reminder of a simpler time in rural Texas.
