The Capron-Phillips House is a special old house located in Coventry, Connecticut. It's found in a historic area called South Coventry Historic District. This house was built around 1864 and is a great example of a building style called Italianate architecture. For many years, it was more than just a home; it also served as Coventry's post office and a drug store! Because of its history and unique style, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It's also an important part of the South Coventry Historic District.
What Makes the Capron-Phillips House Special?
The Capron-Phillips House stands near the eastern edge of the South Coventry village. You can find it on the south side of Main Street, right where Mason Street meets it. This house is quite tall, with three stories made of wood. It has a roof that is almost flat, called a hip roof. There's also a two-story section at the back.
Unique Architectural Details
Look closely at the house, and you'll see some cool details. The edges of the roof and the porch have decorative blocks and brackets. These are small, fancy supports that make the house look elegant. At the front, there's a part that sticks out with a pointed roof. This section has a special window made of three parts, shaped like a round arch.
Inside the house, many original features are still there. The main living rooms have smooth, curved plaster where the walls meet the ceiling. The fireplaces have beautiful carved marble around them. Even the door handles and window latches are original!
A Look Back at the House's History
The Capron-Phillips House was built sometime between 1863 and 1868. A man named George Capron bought the land in 1863. By 1868, the house was standing when he used the property as a loan.
In 1879, Capron sold the house to a bank. Around this time, the house was already being used as the local post office. Later owners continued to run the post office from the house. They also opened a drug store there, which stayed open until 1953. Since then, the building has been used for different businesses, but it has also been a home again.
