History and Design of the Mansion
Who Was Captain Charles Schreiner?
Captain Charles Schreiner, Sr. was a very important person in Texas history. He was a Texas Ranger and a veteran of the Confederate States Army. His family came from French nobility. His father was born in a castle in Alsace, a region in Europe.
The Schreiner family moved to San Antonio in 1852. Charles Schreiner later became a very successful rancher and merchant. He was also known for his kindness and generosity in Kerrville.
Building the Mansion: A Unique Style
In 1879, Charles Schreiner asked a famous architect named Alfred Giles to design his new home. Giles was from San Antonio. The first part of the house had six bedrooms and two stories. It was the very first building in Kerr County made from limestone.
Later, in 1895, Schreiner asked Giles to add a more fancy porch. The mansion shows a mix of building styles. These include Romanesque Revival and Chateauesque. Workers from Germany helped build it. Pink granite columns were brought all the way from Italy.
The Mansion's Journey Through Time
After Charles Schreiner passed away, his family owned the mansion for some time. In 1927, they gave the mansion to the Kerrville Masonic Lodge. The Masonic Lodge then sold the building in 1972 to a private owner. Later, it became the museum it is today.
