Building the Mansion
The mansion was built for a very successful man named Charles Schreiner, Sr.. He was a rancher, a merchant, and he gave a lot to his community in Kerrville. Charles Schreiner asked a famous architect named Alfred Giles to design his home in 1879.
The first part of the house had two stories and six bedrooms. It was the very first building in Kerr County made from limestone. In 1895, Charles Schreiner asked Alfred Giles to add a fancier porch. The mansion shows a mix of building styles, like Romanesque Revival and Chateauesque. This is partly because workers from Germany helped build it. Also, beautiful pink granite columns were brought all the way from Italy to be part of the design.
After Charles Schreiner passed away, his family owned the mansion. In 1927, they gave it to the Kerrville Masonic Lodge. Later, in 1972, a private owner bought the mansion.
