Exploring the Bradford House
The Captain Gamaliel Bradford House is located in Duxbury, Massachusetts. You can find it on the west side of Tremont Street. This historic home is two and a half stories tall and looks pretty square.
What Makes the House Special?
The house has a special kind of roof called a 'hip roof.' On top of this roof is a smaller, raised section, like a little lookout tower. This part is called a 'monitor section.' Most of the house is covered in wooden siding called clapboards. But its side walls are made of brick, which is quite unusual for houses built at that time.
The front of the house faces north and has three sections. The main entrance is in the middle and has a fancy porch with Doric columns. There's also a simpler entrance at the back. Inside, the house has a typical layout with a central hallway. Many of the original wooden panels are still there. A two-story part was added to the back of the house later.
Other Buildings on the Property
The property also includes a barn from the 1800s. There's even a small cottage that was built around 1840. This cottage was made using materials saved from a nearby church.
Who Was Captain Gamaliel Bradford?
The house was built in 1807 for Gamaliel Bradford. He came from a very important family in Duxbury.
