The Capt. John Gunnison House is a special old home in Goshen, New Hampshire. It was built in 1812 and is a great example of Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution.

This house was the childhood home of John Williams Gunnison. He was a military officer and explorer. He led important trips to explore parts of Colorado. The house became a protected historic place in 1979. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Discovering the Gunnison House

The Captain John Gunnison House is in a quiet, country part of Goshen. You can find it on the north side of Goshen Center Road. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of New Hampshire Route 31.

What the House Looks Like

This house has two stories and is made of wood. It has a special roof called a hip roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboards. The front of the house has five sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. It has narrow windows on each side and a decorative arch above it.

A small porch covers the middle three sections of the front. It has round columns holding it up. Inside, the house still has many features from the 1800s. These include special painted designs called stencilwork and feather painting.

A Look at Its History

The Gunnison House was built in 1812. It sits on a large piece of land, about 80 acres (32 hectares). This land was one of the first pieces given out in the town. It was given to Samuel Gunnison.

John Williams Gunnison was born in 1812. So, this house was likely his birthplace. He became a famous explorer. He led expeditions to explore new lands in the American West.

In 1853, John Williams Gunnison died during an expedition in what is now Utah. Many places in Colorado are named after him. This is because he also led important trips there. The Gunnison family sold the house around 1890.
