The Capt. Nathaniel Stone House, also known as the Ring House, is a very old and special home in Farmingdale, Maine. It was built way back in 1872. This house is important because it's the only big example of a building style called Second Empire in its town.

Because of its unique style and history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it's recognized as a place worth protecting for future generations.

What Makes the Stone House Special?

The Capt. Nathaniel Stone House stands on the west side of Maine Street in Farmingdale. It's a wooden house with one and a half stories.

Unique Design Features

One of its most striking features is its special roof, called a mansard roof. This type of roof has slopes on all sides and creates extra space inside for a full second floor. On top of the roof, there's a fancy little tower called a cupola, which is decorated with many details.

The house has three main sections on the front. One section sticks out, giving the house an "L" shape. A porch stretches across the front, supported by square posts. The edges of the roof and windows have decorative brackets. The roof also has dormer windows that stick out, each with a fancy hood.

Inside the Historic Home

Inside the house, you can find many original wooden details. There are also beautiful fireplace mantels. One of these is made from black marble with delicate patterns.

In 1912, a fire caused some damage to the house. However, it was mostly rebuilt to look like it did before. Some parts of the interior now show styles from that time period.

Who Built the Capt. Nathaniel Stone House?

The Capt. Nathaniel Stone House was built in 1872. It was constructed by Nathaniel Stone and his son, Uriah.

Nathaniel Stone's Story

Nathaniel Stone was retired when he built the house. He had a successful career as a chandler, which means he made and sold candles and soap. He was also good at buying and selling land. He did his business in nearby Gardiner and in Boston.

Nathaniel and Uriah also built a barn for carriages that looked similar to the house. However, that barn was taken down in 1950.

Later Owners

Uriah Stone sold the house in 1886 to a person named William Ring. The house stayed in the Ring family for some time. Even after the fire in 1912, the house was mostly restored to its original look by its new owner.
