The Captain Oliver Bearse House was a special old house in Hyannis, Massachusetts, a village within Barnstable, Massachusetts. Built around 1841, it was a great example of Greek Revival architecture, a popular style back then. A famous local ship captain, Oliver Bearse, lived there. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 because of its history. Sadly, a big fire damaged it in 2011, and it was later taken down.

A Look at the Captain's Home

The Captain Oliver Bearse House was located in downtown Hyannis. It was a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. The house had special features like corner pillars and a decorative band called an entablature. The main entrance had windows on the sides and pillars, topped with a heavy frame. A longer section of the house extended to the left, with its own entrance.

Who Was Captain Oliver Bearse?

The house was built around 1841 for Oliver Bearse. His family, the Bearses, were among the first people to settle in Hyannis. Both Oliver and his brother Asa were well-known captains of large ships that sailed the deep seas. Captain Bearse lived in this house until 1850. The house was sold outside of his family in 1898.

Later Years of the House

In the 1900s, a woman named Gladys Bond lived in the house. She was a librarian at the local library for many years. After she passed away in 1959, the house was changed into a place where people could rent rooms. As mentioned, a large fire badly damaged the house in 2011. Because of this damage, the historic Captain Oliver Bearse House had to be taken down.
