The Capt. Samuel Woodruff House is a special old house located at 23 Old State Road in Southington, Connecticut. It was built around 1840 and is a great example of a square Greek Revival farmhouse. This style of building was popular in the United States in the early to mid-1800s. Because it's so well-preserved and unique, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Captain Samuel Woodruff House is found east of Southington's town center. It faces north on the south side of Old State Road. This road used to be the main route to Berlin, but now a newer road passes just south of the property.
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a mostly square shape with a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden siding called clapboard. The front of the house has three sections. It features wide, flat columns (called pilasters) at its corners that reach up to a decorative band. The main front door is on the right side. It has tall, narrow windows on either side and a window above it. A porch with simple square posts stretches across the entire front of the house. There are also smaller additions at the back and side of the main house.
Inside, the house still has many original features. These include the main staircase with details from the Greek Revival style. You can also see wooden panels below the windows in the living room. Many of the original doors and their hardware are still there too. The property also has a few smaller buildings from the early 1900s.
Who Was Captain Samuel Woodruff?
This house was built around 1840. Its square shape makes it quite unusual compared to other Greek Revival houses still standing in Southington. It was likely built by Captain Samuel Woodruff himself. His family had owned land in this area for many generations.
Captain Samuel Woodruff was a well-known person in Southington. He was a veteran of the American Civil War, which was a major war fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. Besides being a soldier, he was also a carpenter. He even co-owned a local business that made carriages. For a long time, the property remained a rural farm. However, in the 1960s, the land was divided up. It has since become a suburban neighborhood with many homes.
