The Captain Merritt House is a special old house located at 619 High Street in Bath, Maine. It was built in 1851 for a ship's captain. The house shows off the rich and fancy style called Italianate. This style was very popular when Bath was a wealthy city in the mid-1800s. The Captain Merritt House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 because of its importance.

Exploring the Captain Merritt House

The Captain Merritt House stands on the east side of High Street. This street is on a hill above the city's shipyards. In the 1800s, it was a very popular and fancy place to live.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a roof that is almost flat, called a hip roof. The outside walls are covered with a type of siding called shiplap. The corners of the building have special decorative blocks, known as quoins. Small dormer windows with hip roofs stick out from the main roof.

The main front door faces west and is in the middle of the house. A porch, called a portico, covers the entrance. This porch is held up by two pairs of columns. Above the porch, there's a window area that sticks out and has many sides, like a polygon. On the south side of the house, there's another part that sticks out, which is two stories tall and shaped like a rectangle. Inside, many of the original wooden details are still there. The dining room was updated around 1900 in a style called Colonial Revival.

Who Lived in the Captain Merritt House?

This house was built in 1851 for Captain Isaac Merritt. He was a very successful shipbuilder and owned many ships. His brother, Samuel Merritt, was also a successful businessman.

In 1880, Captain Merritt moved to California to join his brother. The house was then sold to William Rogers, who was also a shipbuilder. The beautiful design of the house, both inside and out, shows how important and successful Bath was as a center for building and sending out ships in the mid-1800s.
