Griffith Rhys Jones (born December 21, 1834 – died December 4, 1897) was a famous Welsh musician. He was better known by his stage name, Caradog. He led a huge choir called 'Côr Mawr' (which means 'Great Choir'). This choir had about 460 singers! They won top awards at big music contests in London in 1872 and 1873.
Who Was Caradog?
Caradog was a talented Welsh conductor and musician. He became famous for leading large choirs. His most well-known achievement was guiding the South Wales Choral Union to victory. This group was made up of many voices from across South Wales.
Early Life and Work
Griffith Rhys Jones was born in a small village called Trecynon. This village is near Aberdare in Wales. His family lived at the Rose & Crown Tavern.
When he grew up, Caradog worked as a blacksmith. He worked at the Aberdare Ironworks in Llwydcoed. He was also a member of the Unitarian chapel at Hen-Dy-Cwrdd.
Leading the Famous Choir
Caradog's biggest success came with his choir, 'Côr Caradog'. This was a massive choir with singers from all over South Wales. They were also known as the South Wales Choral Union.
The choir competed in major singing contests. These events were held at The Crystal Palace in London. They won first prize two years in a row! This happened in 1872 and again in 1873. After this great success, Caradog helped form other choirs. One of these was in the town of Treorchy.
His Legacy
Caradog passed away in 1897. He was buried in Aberdare Cemetery, close to his birthplace.
In 1920, a special statue was put up to honor him. The famous artist Sir William Goscombe John designed it. You can find this statue in Victoria Square in Aberdare. It reminds everyone of his amazing musical achievements.
