Caramello Koala is a yummy chocolate treat made by Cadbury Australia. It's shaped like a cute cartoon koala and has a gooey caramel center. Sometimes, in ads, the koala character is even called "George"!

About Caramello Koala

Sizes and Popularity

Caramello Koalas come in two main sizes. The regular size is about 15 g (0.53 oz). There's also a "Giant" size, which is around 35 g (1.2 oz). This bigger size is often sold to help raise money for schools or groups.

Did you know that over 50 million Caramello Koalas are sold in Australia every year? That makes it one of the most popular chocolate treats for kids in Australia! Only the Freddo Frog sells more.

Other Caramello Treats

Sometimes, Cadbury makes other products featuring the Caramello Koala character. For example, in 2003, they released Caramello Koala Choc Caramel flavoured milk. In 1997, you could even find Caramello Koala Sundae ice cream!

Caramello Koalas were also sold in South Africa for a while. There, they were called "Caramello Bear." Their slogan was "Met 'n magie propvol caramel," which means "with a tummy full of caramel." However, they stopped selling them in South Africa in 2012.

A Bit of History

The Caramello Koala first appeared in Australia in 1966. Back then, it was called the Caramello Bear. It was one of the first popular sweets to be shaped like an Australian animal.

Old TV ads for Caramello Koala in Australia showed Caramello and his cartoon friends on adventures. They would sail down a river or ride a steam train. The ads used a fun, changed version of the song "Mellow Yellow" by Donovan.

In 2000, the look of Caramello Koala's packaging and character was updated. This happened because people thought the old design looked a bit old-fashioned and not very lively.

Caramello Koala in the News

In 2003, a politician named Mark Latham was called a "Caramello Koala" by another politician, Christopher Pyne. This was a playful way of saying that Mark Latham was "soft in the center," just like the chocolate!

Changes in Size

In 2015, Cadbury decided to make Caramello Koalas a bit smaller. The regular 20 g (0.71 oz) size became 15 g (0.53 oz). The giant size also went from 40 g (1.4 oz) down to 35 g (1.2 oz). Even though they got smaller, the price usually stayed the same. This change happened because the cost of making the chocolates had gone up.
