Freddo is a fun chocolate bar shaped like a cartoon frog. It's a popular treat that looks like a friendly frog character. This chocolate was first made by an Australian company called MacRobertson's. Now, it's produced by Cadbury, a very well-known chocolate maker. Some of the most loved Freddo flavors include strawberry, pineapple, and peppermint.
The idea for Freddo came about in 1930. An 18-year-old employee named Harry Melbourne, who worked for MacRobertson's, created it. In 1967, Cadbury bought MacRobertson's. This meant Freddo Frogs became part of Cadbury's wide range of products. At first, Freddo was only sold in Australia. Over time, it became available in many other countries too.

The Story of Freddo Chocolate
In 1930, the MacRobertson's chocolate company wanted to create a new sweet treat for kids. They first thought about making a chocolate mouse. However, Harry Melbourne, the young employee, had a different idea. He believed that many people, especially women and children, might not like a mouse-shaped chocolate.
So, they decided to make a chocolate frog instead! This new chocolate was named "Freddo Frog." When it first came out, you could find it in four different types. There was classic milk chocolate, white chocolate, a mix of half milk and half white chocolate, and milk chocolate with peanuts.
Freddo Joins Cadbury
Freddo Frogs became part of the Cadbury family in 1967. This happened when Cadbury bought the MacRobertson's company. In Australia, Freddo Frogs are still made in places like Ringwood, Victoria and Claremont, Tasmania. Because Freddo was so popular, Cadbury also created another animal-shaped chocolate. This one is called Caramello Koala, which used to be known as Caramello Bear. Interestingly, Caramello Koala is the only flavor that isn't shaped like Freddo the frog.
Freddo chocolates also made their way to the UK in 1973. They were very popular for a few years but then stopped being sold in 1979. Luckily, they were brought back in 1994 after 15 years! In the UK, you can also buy a Freddo with a yummy caramel filling. This version has a yellow wrapper. It used to be called the Taz bar, featuring the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character. After disappearing for a while, it returned as a Freddo.
In June 2006, there was a safety concern with some Cadbury products in the UK. About a million Cadbury chocolate bars, including the standard Freddo, had to be taken off the shelves. This was done to make sure everyone stayed safe. Cadbury was later fined for this issue.
In 2009, the Freddo chocolate in the United Kingdom got a new look. It featured a shinier Freddo design and an updated Dairy Milk logo. That same year, an animated cartoon series about Freddo was launched online.
The Price of Freddo Over Time
In the United Kingdom, people sometimes use the price of a Freddo to talk about how much things cost. It's a fun way to see how prices have changed over the years. When Freddo bars first came out in the UK in 1973, they cost only 2p. They were then taken off the market in 1979.
When Freddo was brought back in the 1990s, its price was 10p. It stayed at 10p until 2005. After that, the price of a Freddo bar slowly went up by about 2p each year. By 2016, a Freddo cost 25p. In 2017, the price went up to 30p. This made many people talk about it on social media because it was double what it would have been if it had only kept up with inflation. For one week in January 2019, a supermarket called Tesco sold Freddos for the old price of 10p. This was part of their 100-year celebration. By 2022, a Freddo could cost as much as 49p.
Freddo Flavors and Varieties
While Freddo is mostly known as a solid milk chocolate frog, it comes in many exciting versions. Some Freddo chocolates have a creamy center, a caramel filling, or other tasty flavors. These include classic Dairy Milk, white chocolate, and even ones with rice crisps.
Other popular flavors are strawberry, peppermint, Crunchie bits, pineapple, and popping candy. There's also "Rainbow Crunch" and "Milky Top." The "Milky Top" Freddo has a white chocolate top half and a milk chocolate bottom half. This is similar to Cadbury's "Top Deck" products. In Australia, special "twin" Freddos were also sold for a limited time. These had one side filled with lemonade flavor and the other with raspberry.
