Freddo is a yummy chocolate bar shaped like a friendly cartoon frog. It was first made by a company called MacRobertson's, but now Cadbury makes them. You can find Freddo in popular flavors like strawberry and peppermint. Some flavors, like fruit and nut, haven't been as popular over the years.
An 18-year-old named Harry Melbourne invented Freddo in 1930. He worked for MacRobertson's at the time. In 1967, Cadbury bought MacRobertson's and started making Freddo Frogs part of their own chocolate family. Freddo was first sold only in Australia, but now you can find it in many other countries too!
Freddo's Story
In 1930, the MacRobertson's chocolate company wanted to add a new treat for kids. They first thought about making a chocolate mouse. But Harry Melbourne, who invented Freddo, thought that kids and women might not like a mouse-shaped chocolate. He suggested a frog instead!
So, the "Freddo Frog" was born. When it first came out, you could get it in four types: milk chocolate, white chocolate, half milk and half white, and milk chocolate with peanuts.
Freddo Frogs became part of the Cadbury family in 1967. This happened when Cadbury bought MacRobertson's. In Australia, Freddo Frogs are made in Ringwood, Victoria and Claremont, Tasmania. Because Freddo was so popular, Cadbury also created another chocolate called Caramello Koala. This one is shaped like a koala and has caramel inside.
Freddo bars came to the UK in 1973. They were very popular, making lots of money, but then they were stopped in 1979. Luckily, they came back in 1994 after 15 years! In the UK, you can also buy a Freddo with a caramel filling. It has a yellow wrapper. This used to be called the Taz bar, featuring the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character. It disappeared for a while but returned as a Freddo.
In 2006, some Cadbury chocolates in the UK had a problem. About a million chocolate bars, including the regular Freddo, were taken off shelves to keep people safe. Cadbury had to pay a large amount of money because of this.
In 2009, the Freddo chocolate in the United Kingdom got a new look. It had a shinier design and a new Cadbury Dairy Milk logo. That same year, an animated cartoon series about Freddo started online.
The Price of Freddo
In the United Kingdom, people sometimes use the price of a Freddo to talk about how much things cost. It's like a fun way to measure inflation. When Freddo came back in the 1990s, it cost 10p. The price stayed at 10p until 2005.
After 2005, the price of a Freddo went up by about 2p each year. By 2016, it cost 25p. In 2017, the price jumped to 30p. This made many people upset on social media because it seemed too expensive compared to its original price. For one week in January 2019, a supermarket called Tesco sold Freddos for the old price of 10p. Today, a Freddo can cost as much as 49p!
Freddo Flavors
Freddo chocolates are mostly solid milk chocolate. But you can also find them with different fillings or flavors. These include:
- Dairy Milk
- white chocolate
- rice crisp
- strawberry
- peppermint
- Crunchie (with honeycomb pieces)
- pineapple
- popping candy
- "Rainbow Crunch"
- "Milky Top" (this one has a white chocolate top and a milk chocolate bottom, like Cadbury's "Top Deck" chocolates).
The Milky Top Freddo was a new idea from an Australian brand manager named Jesse Karjalainen. He also helped create the Giant Caramello Koala.
