Carbonate County was a special area, like a district, in the state of Colorado. It was quite unique because it only existed for two days in 1879! This county was created when another area, Lake County, was given a new name.
A County's Short Story
On February 8, 1879, the Colorado General Assembly decided to change the name of Lake County to Carbonate County. The Colorado General Assembly is like the state's main law-making group. They are the ones who create and change laws for Colorado.
Just two days later, on February 10, 1879, the same group made another big change. They decided to split Carbonate County into two new parts. One part became a brand new area called Chaffee County. The other part went back to being called Lake County again.
So, Carbonate County had a very short life as a name on the map! It was a quick change that helped create new county boundaries in Colorado.
