He held the titles of 4th Marquis of Almenara and 9th Count of Palma del Río. He was also a Grandee of Spain, which meant he belonged to the highest rank of Spanish nobility. Joaquín had a long career, first as a military officer and government official, and later as a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church. He became a cardinal and ended his life as the Cardinal-Bishop of Sabina.

Joaquín Fernández de Portocarrero: A Life of Service

Early Life and Military Beginnings

Joaquín was born in Madrid, Spain. His parents were Luis Antonio Tomas de Portocarrero and Maria Leonor of Moscoso. When he was in his twenties and thirties, he served as a military leader. He fought in battles for King Philip V of Spain.

Serving as a Viceroy

Later, Joaquín worked for Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. A Viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the king's representative. Joaquín was the Viceroy of Sicily from 1722 to 1728. He also served as the temporary Viceroy of Naples for a few months in 1728. From 1746 to 1760, he was the Spanish Ambassador in Rome. He represented King Ferdinand VI of Spain there.

A Path in the Church

When Joaquín was in his late forties, he decided to join the priesthood. This means he became a priest in the Catholic Church. He was ordained on January 17, 1730. On May 25, 1735, he was appointed as the Latin Patriarch of Antioch, which is a very important church position. Just a few days later, on May 30, he became a bishop.

High Ranks in the Church

Joaquín continued to rise in the church. On September 9, 1743, he was made a cardinal. Cardinals are high-ranking church officials who advise the Pope. He was first appointed as a Cardinal-Priest of Santi Quattro Coronati. He later became Cardinal-Priest of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in 1747. In 1753, he moved to be Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria in Trastevere.

On September 20, 1756, he was appointed Cardinal-Bishop of Sabina. In 1758, he took part in the papal conclave. This is a special meeting where cardinals elect a new Pope. In that conclave, Pope Clement XIII was chosen.

His Final Years

Joaquín Fernández de Portocarrero died in Rome in 1760. He did not have any children. After his death, his noble titles went to another family.
