A map of the Jesuit Mission in Huronia, 1648
An early 20th century map showing the locations of Jesuit missions in Huronia. The believed location of Carhagouha is shown near the top left.

Carhagouha is a very important historic place near Lafontaine, Ontario. It is known by the Huron/Wendat name for the spot where the first Catholic Mass was held in Ontario, Canada. This special event happened on August 12 (or June 24), 1615.

A French priest named Father Joseph Le Caron led the Mass. He was a member of the Recollets, which is a type of Catholic religious order. A famous French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, was also there, along with the Wendat people.

Even today, a Mass is celebrated every year to remember this important day. The exact spot where the first Mass happened is not perfectly known. Carhagouha was also the name of the village where Father Le Caron was staying. This was when Samuel de Champlain arrived in Huronia in 1615. Champlain came to help the Wendat people in their disagreements with the Iroquois people.

Two main figures were present at Carhagouha. Father Joseph Le Caron was a French priest from the Recollets order. He was the one who led the first Mass. Samuel de Champlain was a well-known French explorer. He helped establish early French settlements in Canada. The Wendat people, also known as the Huron, were the Indigenous people living in the area. They played a key role in the early history of this region.
