It's important to know that mountain bikes and dogs are not allowed in the park. This helps protect the wildlife and keep the trails safe for everyone. Caribou Ranch is connected to another park called Mud Lake Open Space by a trail called the Caribou Ranch Link. The park closes every year from April 1st to June 30th. This closure helps protect baby elk and birds that are nesting during the spring.

A Look Back in Time: Park History

Today, Boulder County Parks and Open Space takes care of Caribou Ranch. Long ago, this area was home to Native American tribes who moved around with the seasons.

In the late 1800s, people came looking for valuable minerals. The Blue Bird Mine Complex was a silver mine from that time. You can still see parts of it in the park today! During the summer, visitors would even arrive by train to enjoy the beautiful area.

Later, in the 1930s, a man named Lynn W. Van Vleet used the land to raise special Arabian horses. Then, in 1971, the land was bought and one of the barns became famous. It was turned into the Caribou Ranch recording studio, where many famous musicians recorded music!

Caribou Ranch Open Space is a home for many different animals. You might spot large animals like elk, moose, and mule deer. There are also predators such as black bears, mountain lions, and coyotes.

Smaller creatures like bobcats, bats, beavers, and short-tailed weasels also live here. The park is also a very important spot for many kinds of migratory birds. They visit the park during their long journeys.
