Carl L. Garrett (born August 31, 1947 – died August 24, 2020) was a talented American football running back. He started his professional career with the American Football League's Boston Patriots. Carl was known for his speed and skill on the field, making a big impact early in his career.

Carl Garrett's Amazing Rookie Season

Carl Garrett had a fantastic first year in professional football in 1969. Playing for the Boston Patriots, he quickly became a standout player.

Rookie of the Year

In his rookie season, Carl caught 29 passes for 267 yards. He also scored two touchdowns through the air. On the ground, he ran the ball 137 times for 691 yards, scoring five rushing touchdowns. His average was over five yards per carry, which is excellent! Because of his great performance, Sporting News named him the AFL Rookie of the Year.

Becoming an AFL All-Star

Carl Garrett's skills were recognized by other players and coaches too. In 1969, he was also chosen to be part of the AFL All-Star team. This showed how important he was to his team and how much talent he had.

An Unusual Trade Story

Just before the 1971 football season, Carl Garrett was involved in a very unusual trade. The Patriots traded him to the Dallas Cowboys for another running back named Duane Thomas.

The Trade That Didn't Stick

However, this trade didn't last long! Soon after both players joined their new teams, the trade was called off. Duane Thomas went back to the Cowboys, and Carl Garrett returned to the Patriots. It was a rare event in professional sports. The Dallas Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl at the end of the 1971 season, with Duane Thomas as their top rusher in that championship game.

Later Career and Super Bowl Win

Carl Garrett continued his career, playing for several other teams. He played for the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets. Later, he joined the Oakland Raiders. With the Raiders, Carl Garrett achieved a huge goal: he became a Super Bowl champion in Super Bowl XI. This was a major highlight in his football journey.
