Carlo Allioni (born September 23, 1728, died July 30, 1804) was an important Italian scientist. He was a physician (doctor) and a botanist (someone who studies plants). He taught about plants at the University of Turin in Italy.
His most famous book was Flora Pedemontana, published in 1755. In this book, he wrote about the many plants found in the Piedmont region of Italy. He listed 2,813 different kinds of plants. Out of these, 237 were types of plants that no one had ever described before! In 1766, he also published a book about insects called Manipulus Insectorum Tauriniensium.
Carlo Allioni's Career
In April 1758, Carlo Allioni became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists in London.
In 1760, he was named a special professor of botany at the University of Turin. He also became the director of the Turin Botanical Garden. This is a special garden where many different plants are grown for study. A science journal about plants, called Allionia, is named after him. This shows how important his work was.
Other famous scientists also honored Carlo Allioni. First, Pehr Löfling, and then Carl Linnaeus, named a plant genus (a group of related plants) from the New World after him. This plant group is called Allionia. Another scientist, Per Axel Rydberg, named a genus Allioniella after him. This genus is now part of the Mirabilis plant group.
Many specific plant species are also named after him, including:
- Arabis allionii
- Jovibarba allioni
- Primula allioni
- Veronica allionii
