Carlo Favetti (born August 30, 1819 – died December 1, 1892) was an Italian politician and lawyer. He was also a poet who wrote in the Friulian language. He is known for starting and leading a movement called Italian irredentism in Gorizia and Gradisca. This movement aimed to unite Italian-speaking areas with the country of Italy.

Who Was Carlo Favetti?

Carlo Favetti was born in Gorizia, which was part of the Austrian Empire at the time, but is now in Italy. He came from a wealthy middle-class family. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was the granddaughter of a famous historian named Giuseppe Cipriani.

Early Life and Education

After finishing high school in Gorizia, Carlo went to the University of Vienna. There, he studied law. When he returned to Gorizia, he joined several groups that supported Italian unity. In 1850, he started a newspaper called Il Giornale di Gorizia. However, the Austrian government shut down his newspaper in 1851.

Working for His City

In 1861, after some political freedoms were restored in the Austrian Empire, Carlo Favetti was elected mayor of Gorizia. But the Austrian government did not approve his election. Even so, he remained a very important person in the local government. Under his guidance, many new buildings were constructed in Gorizia.

Challenges and Return

In 1866, during a war called the Third Italian War of Independence, Austrian authorities arrested Favetti. He was sentenced to six years in prison for working to unite Italian-speaking lands with Italy. However, he was released the very next year. Fearing another arrest, Favetti escaped to Italy in 1868 and settled in Venice.

After an official pardon (called an amnesty) was given in 1871, he returned to Gorizia. In 1877, he was re-elected to the city council of Gorizia. He continued to serve on the council until he passed away in 1892.
