Carlo Ubbiali (born September 22, 1929 – died June 2, 2020) was an Italian motorcycle racer. He became a nine-time World Champion in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. During the 1950s, he was one of the best riders in the smaller motorcycle classes. He won six world titles in the 125cc class and three in the 250cc class.

Carlo Ubbiali's Racing Journey

Carlo Ubbiali was born in Bergamo, Italy. His amazing racing career began in 1949. This was the very first year of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. In his first year, he rode an MV Agusta motorcycle. He finished fourth in the 125cc race category. That same year, he also won a gold medal in a tough off-road motorcycle event called the International Six Days Trial.

Switching Teams and Winning Big

For the 1950 racing season, Carlo joined the Mondial team. The next year, in 1951, he won his first ever world championship title for Mondial. This was a huge moment for him!

After losing his championship in 1952, he went back to racing for MV Agusta. This turned out to be a great move. He became their top rider. He continued to win many races and championships.

Double Championships and Retirement

Carlo Ubbiali was so good that he won two championships in the same year, three times! This happened in 1956, 1959, and 1960. He won both the 125cc and 250cc titles in those years. He also won the famous Isle of Man TT races five times.

What made Carlo special was how rarely he made mistakes. He was known for being very careful and precise. In his entire 12-year career in Grand Prix racing, he never had a serious crash. This is very rare for a motorcycle racer!

Carlo Ubbiali decided to retire from racing when he was 30 years old. He was still at the top of his game when he stopped. For a long time, many people thought he was Italy's greatest motorcycle racer. Later, another amazing Italian rider named Giacomo Agostini came along.

Legacy and Hall of Fame

Carlo Ubbiali won nine World Championships in total. This puts him in a special group with other racing legends like Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi. They are tied for third place on the list of most championship wins. Only Giacomo Agostini and Ángel Nieto have won more.

In 2001, the F.I.M. recognized Carlo's incredible career. They added him to the MotoGP Hall of Fame. This is a very high honor for motorcycle racers. In 2019, he received another special award called the Coni Golden Collar.

Carlo Ubbiali passed away on June 2, 2020. At the time of his death, he was the last living rider who had competed in the very first Grand Prix motorcycle racing season back in 1949.
