Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carloman I of Austrasia (born between 706 and 710, died August 17, 754) was an important Frankish ruler. He belonged to the powerful Carolingian family. Carloman was the son of the famous Charles Martel and the older brother of Pepin III.

Who Was Carloman I?

Carloman I was a key figure in the Frankish kingdom during the 8th century. He helped lead the Franks alongside his younger brother, Pepin III. Their family, the Carolingians, was becoming very powerful at this time.

Early Life and Family

Carloman grew up in a very influential family. His father, Charles Martel, was known as the "Hammer." Charles Martel was not a king, but he was the Mayor of the Palace. This role meant he held the real power in the Frankish kingdom.

When Charles Martel died in 741, he divided his power between his two sons. Carloman received the eastern part of the kingdom, called Austrasia. Pepin III received the western part, Neustria.

Sharing Power with Pepin

Carloman and Pepin ruled together for several years. They worked to keep the Frankish kingdom strong. They also had to deal with various rebellions and challenges from within their own family.

They often led armies together to put down these uprisings. Their joint rule showed how strong the Carolingian family had become. They were effectively ruling the Franks, even though the official kings were still from the Merovingian family.

Important Decisions as Ruler

Carloman was very religious. He supported the Church and worked closely with important church leaders. One of his main goals was to reform the Frankish Church.

He helped organize important church meetings called synods. These meetings aimed to improve the behavior of priests and monks. Carloman believed that a strong and moral Church was important for the kingdom.

Becoming a Monk

In 747, Carloman made a surprising decision. He decided to give up his power and become a monk. This was a very unusual step for a powerful ruler. He left his kingdom to his brother Pepin.

Carloman first went to Rome. Then, he founded a monastery on Mount Soracte. Later, he moved to the famous Monte Cassino monastery in Italy. He lived there as a monk until his death in 754.

Carloman's Legacy

Carloman's decision to become a monk helped his brother Pepin. It allowed Pepin to become the sole ruler of the Franks. Soon after, Pepin became the first Carolingian king, ending the Merovingian dynasty.

Carloman is remembered for his strong faith and his efforts to reform the Church. His actions also played a part in the rise of the Carolingian dynasty. This family would go on to create a vast empire under Pepin's son, Charlemagne.
