Carlos Fitz-James Stuart y Martínez de Irujo, born on October 2, 1948, is a Spanish nobleman. He is known as the 19th Duke of Alba. He leads the House of Alba, which is one of Spain's oldest and most important noble families.

Life and Career

Carlos Fitz-James Stuart was born in Madrid, Spain. He is the oldest son of Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, 18th Duchess of Alba. His father was Luis Martínez de Irujo y Artázcoz. When he was just two years old, in 1951, he received his first title: the 14th Duke of Huéscar. This title was given to him by his grandfather. Carlos is also a direct descendant of James II of England, a former king.

He studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid. Today, he works as an adviser for several cultural groups. These include the Hispania Nostra Foundation and the Hispanic Society of America. He is also in charge of the House of Alba Foundation. This means he looks after many important historical items and properties belonging to the House of Alba.

When his mother passed away in 2014, Carlos became the 19th Duke of Alba. He also inherited many other noble titles. Most of these titles were officially confirmed in 2015. Later that year, he shared some of his titles with his sons. He gave the title of Duke of Huéscar to his older son, Fernando. He also gave the title of Count of Osorno to his younger son, Carlos.

Family

On June 13, 1988, Carlos married Matilde de Solís-Beaumont y Martínez de Campos. Their wedding took place in the Seville Cathedral. Matilde is the daughter of Fernando de Solís y Atienza.

Carlos and Matilde had two sons before their marriage ended in 2004:

  • Fernando Fitz-James Stuart y de Solís, born on September 14, 1990. He is the 17th Duke of Huéscar.
    • Fernando has two daughters: Rosario Fitz-James Stuart y Palazuelo (born September 8, 2020) and Sofía Fitz-James Stuart y Palazuelo (born January 10, 2023).
  • Carlos Fitz-James Stuart y de Solís, born on November 29, 1991. He is the 22nd Count of Osorno.
    • Carlos has one son: Carlos Fitz-James Stuart y Corsini (born March 4, 2024).
