Carlos Lessa (born July 30, 1936 – died June 5, 2020) was a famous Brazilian economist and professor. His full name was Carlos Francisco Theodoro Machado Ribeiro de Lessa. He was known for his work in economics and for leading important institutions in Brazil.
Early Life and Education
Carlos Lessa was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 30, 1936. He came from a wealthy family and went to private schools in his hometown.
He studied economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, graduating in 1959. Later, he earned a Master's degree from the Conselho Nacional de Economia. In 1980, he completed his Doctor's degree in Human Sciences at the University of Campinas.
Career as a Professor and Leader
Carlos Lessa worked as a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He also taught at the Rio Branco Institute, which is a special school for people who want to become diplomats for Brazil.
In 2002, Lessa was chosen to be the Rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. A rector is like the president of a university. He held this important position for a short time, from July 2002 to March 2003.
In 2003, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, chose Carlos Lessa to be the President of the Brazilian Development Bank. This bank helps fund big projects and businesses in Brazil to help the country grow. Lessa was in this role from January 2003 to November 2004. He resigned because he had different ideas about economic policies compared to other important government officials.
Personal Life and Death
Carlos Lessa loved the Brazilian Carnival. He even started his own Carnival group called Minerva Assanhada. This group was mostly made up of students and staff from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
His son, Rodrigo Lessa, is a singer-songwriter and plays many musical instruments.
Carlos Lessa passed away on June 5, 2020, in Rio de Janeiro. He was 83 years old. His death was due to problems from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.
