Carlos Patiño
Carlos Patiño was a famous Spanish composer.

Carlos Patiño was a well-known Spanish composer from the Baroque period. He was born in Cuenca, Spain, in 1600 and passed away in Madrid on September 5, 1675.

When Carlos Patiño was a boy, he sang in the choir at Seville Cathedral. There, he learned a lot about music from a teacher named Alonso Lobo. Later in his life, he became a priest. In March 1628, he became the music director, or maestro de capilla, at a very important monastery in Madrid called the Real Monasterio de la Encarnación, Madrid. He took over this job from Gabriel Díaz Bessón.

A few years later, on January 1, 1634, Patiño became the main music director for the King's own chapel. This was a big deal because he was the first Spanish-born person to hold this important position. Even when he wanted to retire in 1660, he was asked to stay and was given two helpers.

Much of Patiño's sacred music, which was written for churches, used a style called polychoral. This means it was written for several choirs singing at the same time. He also wrote music for special events at the royal court. Sadly, many of his sacred works were lost in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. However, some of his music survived and was found in the New World (the Americas). He also composed music for plays, like El Nuevo Olimpo in 1648, but this music is also lost.

What Music Did He Write?

Carlos Patiño wrote many different types of music during his life. Here are some examples of his works:

  • 13 masses (music for church services)
  • 49 motets (short pieces of sacred choral music)
  • 21 psalms (songs based on texts from the Bible)
  • 6 litanies (prayers with a series of requests)
  • 11 cantos evangelicos (songs based on gospel texts)
  • 2 eucharist hymns (songs for a special church ceremony)
  • 32 villancicos (a type of Spanish song, often for Christmas)
  • 14 tonos humanos (Spanish secular songs)
  • Music for theatre plays
