Alonso Lobo

Alonso Lobo (born February 25, 1555 – died April 5, 1617) was a Spanish composer from the late Renaissance period. The Renaissance was a time of great art and discovery. Even though he is not as famous today as his friend Tomás Luis de Victoria, people at the time thought he was a very important musician. Victoria himself believed Lobo was just as talented as he was!

About His Life

Alonso Lobo was born in a town called Osuna in Spain. When he was young, he was a choirboy at the big cathedral in Seville. This means he sang in the church choir. Later, he earned a degree from the University of Osuna. Before 1591, he became a "canon" at a church in Osuna. A canon was a type of priest who was part of a church's leadership.

In 1591, the Seville Cathedral asked him to be an assistant to another famous composer, Francisco Guerrero. Lobo later became the "maestro de capilla" (which means music director or choirmaster) when Guerrero was away. In 1593, the Toledo Cathedral hired him as their music director. He stayed there until 1604. After that, he went back to Seville, where he lived until he died.

His Music Style

Lobo's music mixes two main styles. It has the smooth, flowing sound of Palestrina's music. This is called counterpoint, where different melodies are played at the same time but sound good together. His music also has the deep, serious feeling of Victoria's work.

Some of Lobo's music uses a technique called polychoral. This means it was written for more than one choir singing at the same time. This style was very popular in Italy around the year 1600. Lobo usually used two choirs. Other composers, especially from the Venetian school in Italy, sometimes used many more choirs!

Lobo's music was important not just in Spain, but also in Portugal and even as far away as Mexico. For over a hundred years after his death, people considered him one of the best Spanish composers.

What Kind of Music Did He Write?

Alonso Lobo wrote many different types of church music. These include:

  • Masses: These are long musical pieces for church services.
  • Motets: These are shorter pieces, usually for choir.
  • Three Passion settings: Music that tells the story of Jesus's last days.
  • Lamentations: Sad songs, often based on parts of the Bible.
  • Psalms and hymns: Songs based on religious texts.

He also wrote a special piece called a Miserere for 12 voices, but this piece is now lost. His most famous work is Versa est in luctum. He wrote this piece when King Philip II died in 1598. We don't know of any non-religious music or music for instruments that Lobo wrote.

Recordings

Alonso Lobo's music is still performed and recorded today by many choirs and musical groups. Some of his well-known pieces that have been recorded include Lamentations, Versa est in luctum, and his Masses.
