The Raid on Mount's Bay
Carlos de Amésquita commanded a small fleet of four galleys. These were long ships powered by oars and sails, often used in battles at sea. His ships were named Capitana, Patrona, Peregrina, and Bazana.
Landing in England
Amésquita and his soldiers first landed in Penmarch, France, on July 26. A few days later, on August 2, they sailed across the English Channel. They landed in Mount's Bay in Cornwall, England.
Attacks on Coastal Towns
The Spanish forces first attacked the town of Mousehole. They burned down many buildings there. After that, Amésquita and his men got back on their galleys. They sailed about two miles further along the coast.
They landed again and attacked more towns. They captured and burned the fort of Penzance. They also set fire to parts of Newlyn and the town of Penzance itself.
A Promise in Penzance
While in Penzance, the Spanish soldiers held a religious ceremony. This took place at St. Mary Chapel. During this ceremony, they made a promise. They vowed to hold another mass in England once the country had been defeated.
