Carme Pigem Barceló (born April 8, 1962) is a famous Spanish architect. She is part of the team RCR Arquitectes, which won the very important Pritzker Prize for architecture. She works with her partners, Ramón Vilalta and Rafael Aranda.

Life and Career

Carme Pigem grew up in a town called Olot in the Catalonia region of Spain. Her future partners, Rafael Aranda and Ramón Vilalta, also grew up there. From 1977 to 1979, all three of them studied at the School of Fine Arts in Olot.

Later, they all went to a university for architecture called ETSA Vallés. They graduated in 1987. After finishing their studies, they decided to go back to their hometown of Olot. There, they started their own architecture company, RCR Arquitectes.

Teaching Architecture

Besides designing buildings, Carme Pigem also became a teacher. She wanted to share her knowledge with new students of architecture.

  • 1992-1999: She taught students how to design buildings at her old university, ETSA Vallés.
  • 1995-2004: She was also on the team that gave out the final grades for architecture students at ETSA Vallés.
  • 1997-2003: She taught at another top architecture school in Barcelona called ETSAB.
  • Since 2005: She has worked as a special guest teacher at the Department of Architecture at ETHZ in Switzerland, a world-famous university.

Winning a Top Award

In 2017, Carme Pigem and her partners received the Pritzker Prize. This award is often called the "Nobel Prize for architects." It is one of the highest honors an architect can win. The prize recognized their amazing work and creative building designs.

Supporting Culture and the Economy

In June 2020, Carme Pigem joined a group of important people from around the world. This group included other architects, famous chefs, and winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics.

They all signed an appeal called “Towards a cultural renaissance of the economy.” This idea, sometimes called the purple economy, says that culture—like art, design, and music—is very important for a strong economy. The appeal was published in major newspapers like El País, Le Monde, and Corriere della Sera.
