Carme's Journey to Becoming a Chef
Carme grew up in a family of farmers. She started cooking when she was a young girl. She learned special ways to prepare meats, called Charcuterie (shar-KOO-tuh-ree). This is a French word for making cured meats like sausages. She also studied business. In 1975, she married Toni Balam, who owned a grocery store. Together, they opened their first restaurant, Sant Pau, in 1988.
Earning Michelin Stars and Awards
Carme Ruscalleda is famous for earning many Michelin stars. Michelin stars are special awards given to restaurants for excellent food. They are like gold medals for chefs!

Since the year 2000, Carme Ruscalleda has written many cookbooks. These books focus on Mediterranean cuisine. This type of cooking uses fresh ingredients like vegetables, olive oil, and seafood. Her books include recipes that are easy for people to make at home.
One of her most popular books is Cuinar per ser feliç (2001). This means Cooking to be happy. She also published an English book called Carme Ruscalleda's Mediterranean cuisine in 2007.
Since 2009, Carme has also worked with her son, Raül Balam. They oversee the two-Michelin-starred Moments restaurant. This restaurant is located in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Barcelona.
