Carmelina Moscato (born May 2, 1984) is a Canadian soccer coach and former professional player. She is currently an assistant coach for Racing Louisville FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Carmelina played as a defender for many teams, including U.P.C. Tavagnacco in Italy, Piteå IF and Dalsjöfors GoIF in Sweden. She also played for NWSL teams like the Chicago Red Stars, Boston Breakers, and Seattle Reign FC. In Australia, she played for Western Sydney Wanderers. She played 94 games for the Canadian national team.

Early Life and Soccer Start
Carmelina Moscato was born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were from Sicily, Italy. She started playing soccer at age four for Dixie SC. She went to St. Hilary Elementary School. In high school, she attended St. Francis Xavier Secondary School in Mississauga. There, she was named the Most Valuable Player for her soccer skills. She also played for a club team called Burlington Flames.
College Days and Big Wins
From 2002 to 2005, Carmelina went to Pennsylvania State University. She played for the Nittany Lions soccer team. She helped them win four Big Ten regular season championships. Her team also reached the College Cup semifinals in 2002 and 2005. In 2002, they were Big Ten Champions and made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Championship.
Playing Soccer Around the World
Canadian Teams and Early Success
Carmelina joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2003. In 2004, she helped the Whitecaps win their first W-League championship title. She scored three goals and made three assists that season. After that, she joined Ottawa Fury in 2005. She is still one of the top players for the Whitecaps, with five goals and five assists in 14 games.
Playing in Europe and the NWSL
From 2009 to 2010, Moscato played for UPC Tavagnacco in Italy's top soccer league, Serie A. She scored one goal in 15 games as a defender. In 2011, she moved to Sweden to play for Piteå IF. She played ten games and scored one goal. She also played one game for Dalsjöfors GoIF in 2012.
In 2013, Carmelina joined the Chicago Red Stars for the first season of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played five games for them. Later that year, she was traded to the Boston Breakers, where she played five more games. In September 2013, she moved to Seattle Reign FC for the 2014 season.
Representing Canada: International Career
Carmelina Moscato started playing for the Canadian U-20 national team when she was just 16. Her first game was in February 2001. She played in the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in Canada. She played in all six games and helped Canada reach the final, where they lost to the United States.
On April 3, 2002, Carmelina played her first game for Canada's senior team. She played in big tournaments like the 2002 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup and the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. After taking a break, she returned in 2009. She played for Canada in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. She also played in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Some of her biggest achievements with the national team include:
- Winning the 2010 CONCACAF Tournament.
- Winning the Cyprus Cup in March 2011.
- Earning a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Becoming a Coach
After her playing career, Carmelina started coaching. She was an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin and for the Louisville Cardinals.
Coaching Youth and National Teams
In August 2016, Moscato coached Canada's women's under-15 team. She led them to second place in the 2016 CONCACAF Girls' U-15 Championship. In 2017, she was the Talent Manager for the Canadian REX Development program. From 2018 to 2020, she was an assistant coach for the Canadian women's U20 team. She also worked as a Technical Director for a youth soccer team.
Leading Teams in Denmark and Mexico
Carmelina became the head coach of the FC Nordsjælland women's team in Denmark in July 2021. In June 2022, she became the Technical Director and head coach for Liga MX Femenil club Tigres UANL in Mexico. She was the first woman and first non-Mexican to hold this role. Under her leadership, Tigres won the Apertura Liguilla championship in 2022. This was the first time a foreign-born coach won a title in Liga MX Femenil history. She left Tigres Femenil in June 2023. In February 2024, she joined Racing Louisville FC as an assistant coach.
Helping Soccer Grow Off the Field
Carmelina also worked in administrative roles to help soccer grow. In Australia, she was a Director and Coach for the Illawarra Stingrays Women's Senior Program. In September 2019, she was named the Commissioner of the League1 Ontario Women's Division. She left this role in December 2020. In February 2021, she became the Director of Women's Football for the Bahamas Football Association.
