Carmen is a special part of San José Canton in Costa Rica. It's one of the main areas that make up downtown San José. Even though not many people live here, it's a very busy place during the day!

Where is Carmen Located?
Carmen is in the northern part of the San José Canton. It shares borders with other areas. To the north is Goicoechea Canton, and to the east is Montes de Oca Canton. Both of these are also in San José Province.
Within San José Canton, Carmen borders the Catedral District to the south. To the west, it borders the Merced District.
Size and Height of Carmen
Carmen covers an area of about 1.47 square kilometers. That's like a small city park! It is located at an elevation of 1156 meters above sea level.
What's in Carmen?
This district is made up of several smaller areas called barrios or neighborhoods. Some of these include Barrio Amón, Barrio Aranjuez, part of Barrio La California, El Carmen, El Empalme, Barrio Escalante, and Barrio Otoya.
Many important places are found here. These include government buildings, hospitals, and cultural spots.

- Hospital Calderón Guardia – This is one of the three biggest hospitals in Costa Rica. It helps many people get well.
- National Library of Costa Rica – This is the main library for the whole country. It holds many important books and documents.
- National Insurance Institute – This is a government company that handles all insurance business in Costa Rica.
- Atlántico railway station – This is a major train station. It's a hub for the Interurbano Line train.
