Catedral is a special area, or district, in the city of San José, which is the capital of Costa Rica. It's part of the San José canton in the San José province. Catedral is one of the four main parts that make up the center of San José city.

What's in a Name?

This district is called Catedral because of the very important Cathedral of San José located there. A cathedral is the main church for a large area, and this one is home to the Archdiocese of San José. Many other important government buildings are also found within its borders.

Where is Catedral?

Catedral covers an area of about 2.35 square kilometers (that's like 235 football fields!). It sits at an elevation of 1161 meters above sea level, which is quite high up.

This district is in the center-east part of its canton. It shares a small border with the Montes de Oca Canton to the east. Catedral is surrounded by other districts: Zapote to the east, San Sebastián to the south, Hospital and Merced to the west, and El Carmen to the north.

Important Places to See

Catedral is made up of several smaller areas called "barrios" or neighborhoods. Some of these include Bellavista, Luján, and Soledad. Many important buildings are located here:

  • National Theatre of Costa Rica: This is Costa Rica's most famous theater. It's a very important place for culture and arts in the country.
  • Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social: This is a government office. It helps manage medical care and social security for people in Costa Rica.
  • Cathedral of San José: This is the main church in the city. It's where the archbishop, a very important church leader, works.
  • Tribunals of Justice: These buildings are where the country's laws are handled. They are in charge of the justice system in Costa Rica.

How Many People Live Here?

In 2011, about 12,936 people lived in Catedral. This district has the most people living per square kilometer compared to the other three downtown districts.
