Carmen Bernand (born Carmen Muñoz on 19 September 1939) is a French anthropologist, historian, and expert in Latin American studies. She is known for her work on the history and cultures of the New World, especially the Andes region.

About Carmen Bernand
Carmen Bernand was born in France in 1939. Her parents were Spanish refugees. She spent 25 years living in Argentina. There, she studied ethnology at the University of Buenos Aires. Ethnology is the study of different cultures and how they relate to each other.
In late 1964, she moved to Paris, France. She continued her studies there, working on a special research project. In 1966, she married André Bernand, who was an epigraphist. An epigraphist studies old writings carved into stone or other hard materials.
Her Work and Research
Carmen Bernand is an expert on the history of the New World and Latin America. The New World refers to the Americas, discovered by Europeans after 1492. She traveled to Argentina, Peru, and Ecuador. There, she studied the people living in the Andes mountains.
Since the late 1980s, she has focused on the history and culture of Latin America. This field is called historical anthropology. It combines history with the study of human societies and cultures.
Teaching and Contributions
Carmen Bernand teaches at the Paris Nanterre University. She is also a member of the Institut Universitaire de France. From 1999, she was a Deputy Director at the Centre for Research on the American Worlds. She also helps with an important journal about anthropology and museums called Gradhiva.
She has written many books. With Serge Gruzinski, she wrote De l’idolâtrie and two books called Histoire du Nouveau Monde. She also wrote Un Inca platonicien, about Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. One of her most famous books is Les Incas : Peuple du Soleil. This book is about the Inca Empire and has many pictures. It has been translated into ten languages, including English. She even wrote a crime novel in Spanish that takes place in the Inca Empire!
