María del Carmen Iglesias Cano, also known as the Countess of Gisbert, is a famous Spanish historian. She is the Director of the Real Academia de la Historia, which is a very important historical society in Spain. In this role, she helped launch an online dictionary of important Spanish people, called the Diccionario biográfico español. She is also a member of the Royal Spanish Academy, which helps guide and regulate the Spanish language.

Carmen Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain, on March 16, 1942. She studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, a well-known university in Spain.
Her Career as a Historian
Carmen Iglesias is an expert in 18th-century history. She has written many books and articles, including works about the French philosopher Montesquieu.
She became a member of the Real Academia de la Historia in 1989. She has been the director of this Academy since 2014, making her the first woman to hold this important position. She also joined the Royal Spanish Academy in 2002.
Connection to the Royal Family
Carmen Iglesias has been a close friend of the Spanish royal family since the 1980s. In 1984, she became a tutor for Infanta Cristina of Spain, who is the daughter of King Juan Carlos. Later, she was also a private teacher for Felipe, Prince of Asturias, who is now King Felipe VI.
Countess of Gisbert
Carmen Iglesias was given the special title of Countess of Gisbert by King Juan Carlos. This title is not passed down to her children.
