María del Carmen Iglesias Cano is a famous Spanish historian. She was given the special title of 1st Countess of Gisbert by King Juan Carlos of Spain. This title is not passed down to her children.
Carmen Iglesias is the Director of the Real Academia de la Historia, which is a very important group that studies Spanish history. She helped create the online version of Spain's national biography dictionary, called the Diccionario biográfico español. She is also a member of the Royal Spanish Academy, which helps set the rules for the Spanish language.

Her Early Life and Studies
Carmen Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain, on March 16, 1942. She went to college at the Complutense University of Madrid. There, she studied history and became an expert.
Her Work as a Historian
Carmen Iglesias is especially good at studying the 1700s, which is also known as the 18th century. She has written many books and articles about this time period. One of the famous people she has written about is the French thinker Montesquieu.
On June 16, 1989, Carmen Iglesias was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia de la Historia. She officially joined on November 4, 1991. Since 2014, she has been the director of this important academy. She is the first woman ever to hold this top position!
She was also chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española on April 13, 2000. She took her seat there on September 30, 2002.
Her Connection to the Royal Family
Carmen Iglesias has been a close friend of the Spanish royal family since the 1980s. In 1984, she became a teacher for Infanta Cristina of Spain, who is the daughter of King Juan Carlos. Later, from the late 1980s until 1993, she was a private teacher for Felipe, Prince of Asturias, who is now King Felipe VI.
