The Carmichael House, also called the Raines-Carmichael House, is a grand old home in Macon, Georgia, United States. It was built in 1848. This house is a great example of Greek Revival architecture. This style looks like ancient Greek temples.

The house was designed and built by a famous local builder named Elam Alexander. Because of its special design and history, the Carmichael House was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973. This means it's a very important historical place in the country.

What Does the Carmichael House Look Like?

The Carmichael House is in the middle of Macon. It's a two-story building made of wood. The house is shaped like a Greek cross. Imagine a cross with four arms of equal length.

Special Features of the House

The house has porches between the arms of the cross. These porches have tall, fancy columns called Ionic columns. Right in the center of the house, a large, eight-sided dome, called a cupola, rises up.

Inside the house, there's a really cool spiral staircase. It goes all the way up to the cupola. Some rooms on the first floor have special areas with columns, too.

History of the Carmichael House

The Carmichael House was built in the late 1840s. It was built for a local judge named Cadawalader Raines. The builder, Elam Alexander, was one of the most important builders in Macon at that time.

Elam Alexander's Work

The Carmichael House is one of Alexander's most detailed and beautiful projects. It's also one of his best-preserved buildings that you can still see today. Experts have called it an amazing example of Greek Revival architecture.

Judge Cadawalader Raines passed away in 1856. The house then went to other families. In the 1900s, it was owned by the Carmichael family, which is where it gets its most common name today.
