Carnestown is a place in Collier County, Florida, United States. It's an "uninhabited unincorporated area," which means no one lives there now, and it's not officially a town or city with its own local government. You can find Carnestown where two main roads meet: United States Route 41 and State Road 29.

What is Carnestown?

Carnestown is a historical spot in Florida. It's known for its connection to early road building in the state. Even though it's not a bustling town today, its past is important for understanding how Florida grew.

How Carnestown Got Its Name

The area was named after a special person: Juliet Gordon Carnes. She lived from 1884 to 1971. In 1907, she married a very important person named Barron Collier. He was a wealthy businessman who helped develop Southwest Florida. In fact, Collier County, where Carnestown is located, is named after him!

The History of Carnestown

Before the 1920s, Carnestown was a significant stop for travelers. It was the end of a long road called the Tamiami Trail coming from Southwest Florida. If people wanted to go further, like to Everglades City or Miami, they had to leave their cars behind. They would then continue their journey on foot!

During the 1920s, Carnestown became a busy place. It served as a major workcamp for people building the rest of the Tamiami Trail. This trail was a huge project, connecting Florida's west coast to its east coast through the Everglades. Once the road was finished, Carnestown was no longer needed as a workcamp. Because of this, the entire settlement was taken down between 1928 and 1929.
