Carol Emshwiller (born April 12, 1921 – died February 2, 2019) was an American writer. She was known for her unique short stories and science fiction novels. Her writing style was often called "avant-garde," meaning it was new and experimental. She also wrote "magical realism," which blends real life with magical elements.

Carol Emshwiller won many important awards for her books. These included the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. Another famous writer, Ursula K. Le Guin, said Carol Emshwiller was a "marvelous magical realist." She also said Carol's stories often had strong female characters and explored women's experiences.
