Her Early Life and School
Carol Smith Schumacher was born in La Paz, Bolivia. Her parents were missionaries. She grew up speaking both English and Spanish.
She studied mathematics at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. She graduated with honors in 1982. At Hendrix, she met her husband, Benjamin Schumacher. He is a physicist.
She continued her studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her Ph.D. in 1989. Her research was about a topic called Banach spaces.
Her Career and What She Does
Carol Schumacher started working at Kenyon College in 1988. She became a full professor there in 2002. She has also been the head of the math department several times.
From 2018 to 2020, she was elected vice president of the Mathematical Association of America. This is a big organization for mathematicians.
She has written two math textbooks. One book is called Chapter Zero: Fundamental Notions of Abstract Mathematics. It helps students learn how to write math proofs. The second book is Closer and Closer: Introducing Real Analysis. This book teaches about real analysis, which is a part of advanced math.
Awards and Recognition
Kenyon College honored Carol Schumacher in 2005. She received their Senior Trustee Teaching Excellence Award. This award is for great teaching.
In 2017, she won the Distinguished Teaching Award. This was from the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America.
In 2023, she received a special award. It was one of the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. This award celebrates excellent college math teachers.
