Early Life and Education
Carolina Araujo was born and grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She loved math from a young age.
She went to the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In 1998, she earned her first degree in mathematics there.
Later, she moved to the United States to continue her studies. She earned her PhD degree in 2004 from Princeton University. Her main teacher there was János Kollár. Her PhD project was about "The Variety of Tangents to Rational Curves."
Career and Research
Today, Carolina Araujo is a researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Brazil. She is the only woman on the permanent research staff at IMPA.
She is also a special associate at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). She helps lead the Committee for Women in Mathematics at the International Mathematical Union. This group works to support women in math around the world.
During her studies and after her PhD, Araujo developed new ways to understand rational curves. These are special kinds of curves in geometry. She published her findings in 2008.
Awards and Recognition
Carolina Araujo has received several important awards for her work.
In 2008, she won the L'Oreal Award for Women in Science in Brazil. This award celebrates women who have made great contributions to science.
She was an important part of the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians. She helped organize the event and was also a speaker. She led the first World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)2 in August 2018.
Araujo was also featured in a short film called Journeys of Women in Mathematics. This film was supported by the Simons Foundation. It showed the paths of several women mathematicians.
In 2020, she received the Ramanujan Prize from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. This prize is given to young mathematicians from developing countries.
She is also honored in a special deck of playing cards. These cards feature famous women mathematicians and were published by the Association of Women in Mathematics.
