Early Life and Education
Carolina Darias was born in Las Palmas on November 25, 1965. She studied law at the University of La Laguna. This education helped her prepare for a career in public service and politics.
Political Career
Carolina Darias has had a long and active career in politics, working at both regional and national levels in Spain.
Regional Politics
Darias began her political journey in her home city. From 1999 to 2004, she was a member of the city council of Las Palmas. This role involved making decisions for the city's residents.
Later, she became a government sub-delegate from 2004 to 2007. In 2007, she was elected to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, representing Las Palmas. However, she left this position in 2008 to become the director of Territory, Town Planning and Housing for the Las Palmas city council.
In 2014, Darias tried to become the President of the Canary Islands for her party, the PSOE, but she did not win the party's internal election. After the 2015 Canarian regional election, her party formed a partnership with another group called Canarian Coalition. Even though her party won fewer seats, she was chosen as the Speaker of the Parliament of the Canary Islands. She was the first woman to hold this important position.
National Politics
On January 11, 2020, Carolina Darias took on a new role in the national government. She was appointed as the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function in the government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. In this job, she was responsible for how the central government worked with different regions and public services across Spain.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Darias worked closely with the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa. She attended many important meetings about health coordination and control. Because of her involvement in health matters during the pandemic, Prime Minister Sánchez announced on January 26, 2021, that she would become the new Minister of Health, taking over from Salvador Illa. She served in this role until March 2023.
Personal Life
In March 2020, it was reported that Carolina Darias had been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic. She was one of the first members of the Spanish government to test positive for the virus. She recovered from the illness.
