About Caroline Gotch

Caroline Burland Yates was born in Liverpool, England, on May 9, 1854. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her father, Edward Yates, was a wealthy property owner in the area.

Her Art Education

Caroline began her art studies in 1878. She first attended the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. After that, she studied at the Slade School of Art, also in London. In 1880, she traveled to Paris, France. There, she enrolled at the Academie Julian, a famous art school.

While studying at the Slade School, Caroline met another artist named Thomas Cooper Gotch. They fell in love and got married in August 1881. Their wedding took place at St Peter's Church in Newlyn.

Life and Travels

After their marriage, Caroline and Thomas returned to France. Their daughter, Phyllis Maureen, was born there in September 1882. Even though Caroline faced health challenges after childbirth, she and her husband loved to travel. In 1883, they even took a trip to Australia.

From 1884 to 1887, the family lived in London. Then, they decided to settle down in Newlyn, Cornwall. They built their family home there, which they called Wheal Betsy.

The Newlyn Art Scene

In Newlyn, Caroline and Thomas became important members of the local art community. They helped start the St Ives Art Club. They were also very active in other artist groups forming in the area. The Newlyn School became well-known for its unique style of painting.

Exhibitions and Awards

Caroline Gotch showed her artwork in many important exhibitions. She regularly displayed her paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This was between 1887 and 1895. She also exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists throughout the 1880s.

Her talent was recognized internationally. She showed her works at the Paris Salon in 1897 and 1898. At these shows, she won second and third place medals for her art.

Caroline also exhibited at other places, including:

  • The Royal Hibernian Academy in 1879
  • The New English Art Club in 1888
  • The Society of Women Artists in 1879 and 1893
  • The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts from 1886 to 1894

In 1895 and 1896, her pieces were shown at the Glass Palace in Munich, Germany. She also displayed her art at commercial galleries like the Grosvenor Gallery, the Goupil Gallery, and the Fine Art Society.

Even though she exhibited widely, not many of Caroline Gotch's original paintings exist today. However, old photographs of her work show beautiful and detailed compositions. These often featured women and children in everyday home settings.
