Caroline Hammer (1832–1915) was one of the very first professional women photographers in Denmark. She started her own photography business on the island of Föhr. There, she had a studio where she took many portraits. In 1881, Caroline Hammer made history. She became the first woman to join the Dansk Fotografisk Forening, which is the Danish Photographers' Association.

Caroline Hammer's Life

Caroline Hammer was born on October 28, 1832. Her family lived in Hulerød, near Hornbæk in northern Zealand, Denmark. Her father, Frederik Abel Hammer, was a naval hero. She was one of nine children in her family.

After her mother passed away in 1849, her family moved. They went to Wyk on the Frisian island of Föhr. Her brother, Otto, already lived there. They moved into a house called Villa Idyle. Otto had built this house for their father and his three sisters.

Starting Her Photography Business

It was in Villa Idyle that Caroline Hammer opened her photography studio. Wyk was a popular vacation spot at the time. Many people visited the island, especially after King Christian VIII came in 1842. This meant she had many customers for her portraits.

We don't know much about how Caroline learned photography. We also don't know who taught her. But her first photos were taken in the 1860s. She took many outdoor pictures. These photos showed people on the beach and around the island. She often included fishing boats and fishermen in her pictures.

Some of her preserved works include family portraits. She also took several landscape photos in the early 1870s. Her pictures of children are especially well-remembered. It is believed she continued her photography work. She stopped when she moved back to Zealand in the 1880s. In 1881, she became the first woman to join the Danish Photographers' Association. This was a big achievement for women in photography.

In 1891, Caroline Hammer had a house built. This house in Fredensborg was for her and her sisters. She no longer worked as a professional photographer. However, she continued to take pictures of her house and garden.

Caroline Hammer passed away in Fredensborg on January 12, 1915.
