Life and Work
Caroline Link was born in Bad Nauheim, West Germany. She is the daughter of Jürgen and Ilse Link. From 1986 to 1990, she studied filmmaking at the University of Television and Film Munich. After her studies, she worked as an assistant director and wrote scripts for films.
Caroline grew up in a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. Even though her family wasn't very artistic, she became interested in filmmaking. She first thought about making movies after working as a nanny in America. When she returned to Germany, she worked as an extra on a film set. She found the work interesting and managed to get an internship in the film industry. Caroline loved working in movies and wanted to create her own stories and share her ideas.
Link's first major film was Jenseits der Stille (Beyond Silence), released in 1996. This movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It became well-known for showing the life of a family with deaf parents.
Her next film was Annaluise and Anton (1999), based on a book by Erich Kästner. Her third big film, Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa), came out in 2001. Caroline adapted this movie from a true story by Stefanie Zweig. It was filmed in Kenya and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also won five German Film Awards, including Best Fiction Film.
Beyond Silence
Beyond Silence was a huge success for Caroline Link. It was nominated for an Oscar and made her famous around the world. The movie tells the story of Lara, a girl whose parents are deaf. It shows the challenges Lara faces while communicating with her parents, Martin and Kai.
Caroline Link explained that the movie is really about how families communicate. She said, "This isn’t really a movie about deafness, Beyond Silence. It’s about deafness on the surface, of course, but the emotional substance is about communication in a family." She wanted to explore a feeling that many people can understand: loving your family but also wanting to explore your own path in life.
Caroline also shared her thoughts on being a woman director. She learned that it's okay for women to be strong and ask for what they need to make their creative ideas happen. She realized that sometimes you have to be firm to achieve your goals.
Personal Life
Caroline Link lives with her partner, film director Dominik Graf. They have a daughter, who was born in 2002.
