Early Life and Education
Carolyn Steinberg loved music from a young age. She studied music at North Texas State University. In 1978, she earned a special degree there in music theory. This means she learned how music is put together.
She continued her studies to become a composer. She went to the Manhattan School of Music. There, she studied with a teacher named Ludmila Ulehla. Carolyn earned her master's degree from this school.
Later, she studied at Juilliard, a very famous music school. She learned from Bernard Rands and received her highest degree in music in 1989. This degree is called a Doctor of Musical Arts.
Studying Music Around the World
Carolyn Steinberg also traveled to Europe to learn more about music. She studied in Siena, Italy, with Franco Donatoni. She also learned in Germany from Brian Ferneyhough and Francis Travis. These experiences helped her become a well-rounded musician.
Teaching and Awards
While she was still studying, Carolyn Steinberg began teaching music. She taught at the Freiburg Conservatory of Music from 1984 to 1986. Later, she taught at the Mannes School of Music from 1992 to 1996. She also taught at the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School from 1993 to 2001.
In 1990, Carolyn Steinberg received an important award. It was called the Goddard Lieberson Award. This award came from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. It recognized her talent and contributions to music.
