A Secret Operation in 1986
In 1986, Carrizal Bajo became important during a time when Chile was under a military government. Between May and August of that year, a group called the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front used the port. This group was linked to the Communist Party of Chile and aimed to challenge the government.
Bringing in Supplies
This group secretly brought in weapons from Cuban ships. These ships anchored offshore, away from the coast. This was the largest secret operation to bring in weapons during the entire military government period in Chile, which lasted from 1973 to 1990.
What Happened Next
Most of the weapons were found by the authorities. However, some of them were moved to other parts of the country. These weapons were later used in a major event against the government leader, Augusto Pinochet, in 1986. The weapons that were found had originally come from the United States and had been obtained by Cuba from Vietnam.
Getting Around Carrizal Bajo
Carrizal Bajo has an airport called Gran Cañon Airport. However, this airport does not have flights for regular passengers. It is mainly used for other types of aviation.
