Carroll Parish, Louisiana facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carroll Parish was a special area in Louisiana that doesn't exist anymore. In Louisiana, a "parish" is like a county in other states. Carroll Parish was an important part of Louisiana's history for many years.

What Was Carroll Parish?

How Carroll Parish Was Formed

Carroll Parish was created in 1838. It was made from a part of a larger area called Ouachita Parish. Imagine taking a piece from a big puzzle to start a new, smaller puzzle – that's kind of what happened!

Changes Over Time

Carroll Parish didn't stay the same size for long. In 1844, another part of it was separated to create Morehouse Parish. Later, in 1877, Carroll Parish was divided into two new parishes: East Carroll Parish and West Carroll Parish. This is why Carroll Parish no longer exists as a single area today.

Important People in Government

During and after a time called the Reconstruction era, people from Carroll Parish helped lead the state. The Reconstruction era was a period after the American Civil War when the country was rebuilding. During this time, Carroll Parish had people called representatives who spoke for the parish in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Two of these representatives were P. Jones Yorke and Cain Sartain. They were both members of the Republican party.
