Carrowcrom Wedge Tomb is an ancient burial site found in County Mayo, Ireland. It is a special type of tomb known as a "wedge-shaped gallery grave." Today, it is protected as a National Monument of Ireland.

Where is Carrowcrom Wedge Tomb?

This ancient tomb is located about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) east-southeast of Ballina town. It sits to the west of the Slieve Gamph area. You can find it near the upper parts of the Srufaungal River.

When was it Built?

The Carrowcrom Wedge Tomb was constructed a very long time ago. It was built between 2500 and 2000 BC. This period is known as the Copper Age or the Bronze Age. People used copper and bronze to make tools and weapons during this time.

What Does it Look Like?

The tomb has been partly repaired over the years. The main burial area is called a "gallery." It is shaped like a wedge, meaning it gets narrower at one end. This gallery is about 3.1 meters (10 feet) long and 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) wide.

Large standing stones, called orthostats, form the sides of the gallery. Two big roof stones completely cover the top of this burial chamber. The entire structure is still covered by a U-shaped pile of stones, known as a cairn. The tomb faces southwest, pointing towards where the sun sets.
