Carshalton was an area in the United Kingdom that used to elect its own representative to the UK Parliament. This special area is called a constituency. Carshalton itself is a suburb located south of London.

The Carshalton constituency was first created for the 1945 general election. It was made from parts of another area called "Mitcham". Later, in 1974, its boundaries changed slightly. The constituency was eventually removed for the 1983 general election. It was then replaced by a very similar area called Carshalton and Wallington. Each constituency sends one person, called a Member of Parliament (MP), to the House of Commons.

What Were the Boundaries of Carshalton?

The Carshalton constituency had different boundaries during its existence. These boundaries decided which towns and areas were part of it.

Carshalton's First Boundaries (1945–1974)

From 1945 to 1974, the Carshalton constituency included two main areas:

  • The Urban District of Banstead
  • The Urban District of Carshalton

It's important to know that these "Urban Districts" stopped existing in April 1965. Banstead became part of Surrey County Council, and Carshalton became part of the London Borough of Sutton.

Carshalton's Later Boundaries (1974–1983)

From 1974 until it was abolished in 1983, the constituency covered specific parts of the London Borough of Sutton. These parts were called "wards." The wards included:

  • Beddington North
  • Beddington South
  • Carshalton Central
  • Carshalton North East
  • Carshalton North West
  • Carshalton St Helier North
