Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Growing Up and Learning Music
Carsten Dahl was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 3, 1967. He started playing the drums when he was just nine years old. He taught himself how to play both the drums and the piano. Later, he studied music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Carsten shared that two musicians, Jørgen Nielsen and Butch Lacy, greatly influenced his piano playing and helped shape his musical journey.
A Professional Musician and Teacher
Carsten Dahl's Career Journey
Carsten Dahl became a professional musician in 1982. He played with different groups, including tenor saxophonist Thomas Agergaard's quartet starting in 1991. He also joined drummer Ed Thigpen's Rhythm Features band in 1998.
Besides performing, Carsten also taught music. He led the rhythmic department at the West Jutland Academy of Music from 1992 to 1996. He also taught at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen for several years. By 2022, Carsten Dahl had played on about 300 music albums.
