The Stuart Randall and Priscilla Kellogg Carswell House is a special historic home located in Newark, Delaware. It was built in 1948 and is a unique example of a building style called the International style in Delaware. This style is known for its clean lines and simple shapes.

Building the Carswell House

The Carswell House was built by Stuart Carswell (1891–1949) and his wife, Priscilla (1907–1991). Stuart Carswell was from Delaware and served in the Army for many years. He fought in World War I.

A Modern Design Idea

In 1936, the Carswells saw a design for an International style house in a magazine called Collier's. They really liked the look and decided they wanted a similar house for themselves.

Choosing the Architect

After Stuart Carswell retired from the Army at the end of World War II, they hired the same architect who designed the house in the magazine. His name was Edward Durell Stone. He created updated plans for their new home. The house was finished in December 1948.

Early Years of the House

Sadly, Stuart Carswell passed away just six months after the house was completed. His wife, Priscilla, later sold the house in 1956.

Restoring a Historic Home

In 1999, new owners began a big project to restore the Carswell House. These owners were both professors at the University of Delaware. They worked hard to make the house look just like it did when it was first built.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

The restoration project was finished in 2012. A year before that, in 2011, the Carswell House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
