History of Cartwrights Hill
Cartwrights Hill gets its name from Thomas Cartwright and his family. They were the first owners of the land here.
Early Life of Thomas Cartwright
Thomas Cartwright came to New South Wales in 1834. He arrived on a ship called the Royal Admiral. He spent his first years in Australia living in the Yass and Illawarra regions. In 1847, he received a special pardon. This pardon allowed him more freedom.
The Cartwright Family in Wagga Wagga
On June 26, 1841, Thomas Cartwright married Catherine Gormly. Their wedding took place at the Goondarin School house. Catherine's family faced a great tragedy in 1852. Her parents and two siblings died in a flood in Gundagai.
The Cartwright family moved to the Wagga Wagga area in the late 1850s. Here, they worked as shepherds, looking after sheep.
